Jennie M. Haver Mrmorial Scholarship

$125,000 Scholarship dollars awarded to 18 Hunterdon Students

One of the largest private scholarship funds in New Jersey has awarded 18 Hunterdon High School Students with $125,000, the highest award amount given in any one year.  Since 1956, this fund has served Hunterdon County exclusively.  To date, the Jennie M Haver Scholarship Fund has awarded 551 students over $1.7 Million.  The scholarship program is funded by donations of individuals and businesses in the community who recognize the value of higher education as a good return on charitable contributions.

“This scholarship,” said Katherine Theleman, President of the fund “is often an exit strategy for someone to overcome a financially challenged home front.  Many of our recipients have already demonstrated their grit, determination, and resilience to overcome unfortunate circumstances and still excel at school work.  They are sure to make a difference in college and their future careers. They are a diverse group who worked hard to achieve outstanding grades, participated in community giving, and held part-time jobs to help meet current expenses.  We are so proud of this class of 2015”

Stephanie Lewis, of South Hunterdon was chosen to receive the “Ella Haver Science Scholarship” in the amount of $15,000.  Michael Walsh, from Voorhees, was granted the $5,000 Wachholtz Science Grant in combination with an additional $3000 from the Memorial Scholarship.

Ten students were awarded the Haver Memorial Scholarships as follows.  Axel Gonzalez and Taylor Allen, both from Hunterdon Central and Alyssa McCabe of Voorhees were each awarded $10,000.  Jameson Colbert of South Hunterdon, Timothy Sattizahn from Deleware Valley, Jennifer Loeffler from North Hunterdon, and Austin Holthaus from Vorhees each received $8,000.  Megan Mauriello from Voorhees was granted $7,000, and Kelsey Shelofsky and Kristian Wu from North Hunterdon each received $6,000 for their scholarships.

Additionally, the Fund offers scholarships in several specific disciplines.  The recipients of these $3,500 awards are: Kyle Straub from North Hunterdon for Nursing; Christine Walsh from Voorhees for Civic Achievements; Amanda Wengryn from South Hunterdon and Lacey Kappus from  Delaware Valley are both recipients for the Agriculture Scholarship; Zachary Ooimi from Hunterdon Central for Music ; and Olivia Turton from Delaware Valley received the Education scholarship award.

“We are so thankful to the teachers and guidance counselors who prepare our students to excel, the generous community in Hunterdon who donate to make these scholarships possible, and the volunteers and trustees who work to facilitate this scholarship fund.  In the words of the traditional African proverb, it takes a village to raise a child.” Said Katherine Theleman.

The Jennie Haver scholarship which I was awarded in 2006 allowed me the opportunity to reap the benefits of a university education, helping me to prepare for the competitive "real world" of a professional musician.  My time in Philadelphia at the University of the Arts was extraordinarily formative educationally as well as personally.

Your generosity helped mold my experience in college. I’ve managed to create a diverse network of friends and family while continuing to pursue my chemical engineering degree along with a concentration in nanotechnology. I’ve also developed invaluable leadership skills that I will most definitely carry with me the rest of my life…. Matthew Louie 2009 Recipient
I would like to thank you again and again for the money that you provided me with because it has helped me greatly.  I never realized how much textbooks cost until I had go digging into my own pockets to purchase them...
